The use of GetDataBack and DiskExplorer is not recommended if data was lost due to a physical problem of the drive, e.g. when your drive makes strange noises, doesn't spin anymore, is no longer recognized by the BIOS.

If your drive has a physical problem we strongly recommend not to handle the drive anymore, but to take the drive to a data recovery service or - at least to make an image of the drive - and run any further recovery attempts on this image.

To recover your data with GetDataBack we strongly recommend the following procedure:

Do not install GetDataBack on the drive you want to recover the data from! Install the program to another computer, which doesn't have any problems. If you have a choice, choose the computer which has the most RAM and is the fastest. Attach the drive you want to recover as a slave to this machine. Make sure the drive is jumpered correctly and is recognized by the BIOS.

After downloading GetDataBack run the setup.exe. The setup wizard will guide you through the installation process.

How to get help with your data recovery...

Depending on the cause for the data loss, recovering the data can be a difficult task. In most cases you will be able to recover your data with GetDataBack just by selecting the right drive or partition and clicking Next, Next, Next... through the three steps of the recovery process.

However, it can happen that the results of the recovery are not satisfying and you cannot see the files you are trying to recover, or when you open them they are not useable.

If this happens, don't throw away the software or the recovery you performed with it! You just probably have to choose another file system in Step 2 of the recovery, or choose the physical drive instead of the logical....

How to check the quality of the recovery before purchasing...

Before you purchase the license key we recommend that you check the quality of the recovered files in Step 3 of the recovery process.

Although in most cases what you see is what you get, it can happen - especially when files were heavily fragmented - that GetDataBack displays the file names correctly in the recovery tree, but when you open the files they are not useable.

In order to make sure that the file contents are alright, select the file in Step 3 of the recovery and press F3 to call the build-in file viewer. The viewer is able to display the file content for various file types (.txt, .doc, .bmp), where the file type is not supported the file content will be shown in hexadecimal format. Or double-click the file to open it in its original application.

Whenever you are unsure about the quality of the recovered files, just give us a call or send us an email.
